BattleTap
Privacy Policy
BattleTap collects as little as it can. You don't need an account, there are no ads, and we never sell your data. This page explains what we do collect and why.
BattleTap is run by Kent Tollette, an individual in Dallas, Texas, USA. Questions: support@battletap.gg.
The short version
- No account needed. No ads. No cookies. No advertising trackers.
- Your streak, stats, favorites and settings stay in your browser.
- Our analytics count what happens in the game without identifying you.
- When you finish the daily, your guesses are scored on our server and then deleted. We keep the distances and your score.
- We never store your IP address.
What stays on your device
Your browser's local storage holds your settings, streak, stats, favorites, today's game in progress, challenges you've sent, the time you asked for a morning reminder if you did so before signing in (never your email address, and only until you open the sign-in link), and two random ids: one for our analytics tool and one (battletap:device-id) used only for the daily rank card. Neither id contains your name or anything about you. Clearing your browser's site data for battletap.gg deletes all of it, including your streak.
Analytics
We use PostHog to see how the game is played. It runs without cookies, identifies no one, and only records events we choose. It does not record clicks automatically, record your screen, or ever receive your guess coordinates. PostHog works out an approximate location (country, region and city) from your connection and then discards your IP address. It also stores your browser and device type.
When you first open a day, we also record the address of the page that sent you here, with everything after the question mark cut off, and the utm_source tag from the link you followed if it has one (such as "reddit"). Other tracking tags in a link are dropped.
We use Vercel Web Analytics to count visits and see which sites send people to us. It also uses no cookies, and it doesn't track you across sites or from one day to the next.
The full list of events is at the end of this page.
The map
The globe's imagery comes from MapTiler. Your browser loads it directly from MapTiler's servers, so MapTiler receives your IP address and the map tiles your browser asks for, as any map service does.
Your daily result and the rank card
When you finish the daily game, the app sends your guesses, the hints you used, how long each round took, the random device id, and the app's version numbers to our server. The server:
- works out your distances and score itself
- deletes your guess coordinates, keeping only the distances, your total score, your hint choices, your round times and a flag from our cheating checks
- records your country and state or region, which come from our hosting provider's reading of your connection, and never stores your IP address
- keeps one result per device per day
We use this to show how you rank against other players. The device id is never linked to our analytics. We keep results indefinitely so all-time stats are possible later. Nothing is sent for archive days or challenges.
Feedback
The in-game feedback form sends your chosen category and message to PostHog. Please don't include personal information in it.
Payments (BattleTap+)
Stripe handles all payments. Your card details go to Stripe and never reach us. Stripe gives us your name, email address, billing country and postal code (needed for sales tax), anything you add in the customer portal such as a phone number or address, and your subscription and payment history. We keep billing records for as long as tax and accounting law requires. Stripe's own use of your data is covered by the Stripe Privacy Policy.
Donations
Ko-fi handles donations under its own privacy policy. If you donate, Ko-fi shares your name, message and donation amount with us.
Accounts, leaderboards and groups
Accounts are live. Leaderboards and groups are not yet available.
Accounts are optional. The daily game never requires one.
- Signing in: you can sign in with a link sent to your email (sent through our email provider, Resend).
- What an account holds: your email address, your display name if you set one, your streak, stats and favorites (synced so they follow you across devices), your daily results, your groups, whether you have turned on the daily reminder email, and, if you subscribe, a link to your Stripe customer record.
- Daily reminder email: off unless you turn it on, in Settings or with Remind me each morning at the end of a day's game. If you aren't signed in, Remind me each morning sends your email address to our sign-in provider, Supabase, which emails you our usual sign-in link, and the reminder starts only once you open that link, on any device. Once it's on, we send one email a day through Resend, only on days you haven't played yet, with a hint about the day's battles, your streak and a link to the game. Every email has an unsubscribe link, your email app's own unsubscribe button works too, and switching it off in Settings stops it.
- Leaderboards are opt-in. Only players who sign in, choose a display name and opt in appear on public boards (world, country and US state). The board shows your display name, score and rank. Groups show your display name and scores to other members of that group.
- Deleting your account: use Delete my account in the menu, or email us. Either way we delete the account, remove you from every leaderboard and group, and delete your synced data. Billing records we're required to keep are kept.
- Accounts are never linked to our analytics.
Who we share data with
Only the services that run BattleTap: Vercel (hosting and traffic analytics), Supabase (our database), PostHog (analytics and feedback), Stripe (payments), Resend (sign-in and reminder emails) and MapTiler (the satellite imagery and map data on the globe). They process data for us. MapTiler is based in Switzerland; the others are in the United States. We don't sell or share your data for advertising, and we don't use advertising or third-party tracking tools.
We'd disclose data if the law required it, or to a new owner if BattleTap were ever sold, in which case this policy would still apply to the data collected under it.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us to see, correct or delete personal data we hold about you. Email support@battletap.gg and we'll reply within 30 days. Because the game works without accounts, most of what we hold can't be tied to you. Daily results are linked only to a random device id, not to you, so we can't match them to a person. You can also clear your browser's site data at any time, and you can cancel BattleTap+ in the customer portal.
Depending on where you live, you may have more rights under local law. Contact us and we'll help.
Children
BattleTap is for people 13 and older. We don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you think a child under 13 has given us personal data, email us and we'll delete it.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections, and our database is locked to our own server. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep what we collect small so there's less to protect.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change affects signed-in players or subscribers, we'll email them.
